I'm just a girl...

Who has decided to write a blog, instead of taking over all of my group texts to talk about the things I'm into.

Sam and Mal Shop Small

My sweet friend Samantha and I have started a challenge to shop small from now through the end of the year. You can read all about the backstory on her company's blog (it's definitely worth the read) but I thought I'd contribute by sharing some of the ways I plan to stay small through the end of the year.

Groceries:

My favorite Saturday activity is visiting my farmer's market and stocking up on veggies and small-batch premade treats (weekly buys include Iconic Cocktail Co. and Persepshen). I also signed up for the weekly CSA from Steadfast Farm and I can't wait for it to start.

For all of my other grocery needs, I'll be shopping at Sprouts. They aren't necessarily "small" but they are locally owned and I'd rather give my dollars to an Arizonan business than a massive retailer like Whole Foods.

Full disclosure, I'm going to miss the hell out of Trader Joe's. We'll see how things go without my main man Joe in my life.

Food

I was chatting about the challenge with my brother's girlfriend and she immediately asked "But what about when you need to eat out?" and I was immediately stoked at the chance to tell her about all of the incredible locally owned restaurants in her neighborhood. Some places I plan to frequent (and, if we're honest, I already frequent these spots) are as follows:

Coffee: Kream, Cartel, Ollie Vaughn's
Breakfast/Brunch: Fame Caffe, Crepe Bar, La Grande Orange
Lunch: Worth Takeaway, N Counter, Chop Shop
Dinner: Cibo, Phoenix Public Market Cafe, Cherry Blossom Noodle Cafe, The Stand
Drinks: Lux, Huss Tap House, Bitter & Twisted

Entertainment

When I go out, my fun typically revolves around food. But if you're looking for some local activities to fill your time, here are some upcoming events that are a great time and help keep small businesses afloat:

Phoenix Flea
Crafeteria
Chile Pepper Festival
Taco Festival

Shopping

Spending money is fun right? Here are my favorite local spots for retail therapy.

Vida Moulin, Phoenix General, Local Nomad,

So that's it!

If you'd like to follow along on the adventure, you can find us on instagram #samandmalshopsmall (@samstandard / @malorimaeva) and we'll both be posting some updates on the blog as well. Let us know if you join in! We'd love to hear what challenges you run into and what new things you discover as you try to shop small.
